Most of us are completely familiar with standard vending machines: you put money in, and a snack or a cold drink comes out. A reverse vending machine works in the exact opposite way. You put an empty drinks container in, and the machine gives you a financial refund.

How does a reverse vending machine work?
While a reverse vending machine looks simple from the outside, the interior houses a fast-moving array of advanced scanning technology. The entire process takes only a few seconds per container, following a precise four-step loop:
1. Insertion: The user places an empty bottle or can into the receiving aperture. Modern machines can accept containers one by one through a single-feed slot, while high-volume industrial systems allow users to dump an entire bag of mixed containers into a large bulk-feed gate at once.
2. Instant Identification: Once inside, the machine scans its barcode. At the exact same time, advanced optical sensors and internal cameras instantly analyse the container’s physical shape, material composition, and mass to verify that the item is legitimate and eligible for a refund.
3. Compaction: To maximize space, the machine immediately processes the validated container. Plastic bottles and aluminium cans are crushed flat (with plastic bottles being micro-perforated so they cannot reinflate), while glass bottles, if they are part of the scope of a country’s DRS, are either safely crushed into clean cullet or gently moved to a soft-drop storage bin if they are designed to be washed and reused.

The true value of an RVM lies in what happens behind the scenes. In traditional open street bins, recycling gets contaminated by food waste, paper, and mixed trash, which heavily degrades the quality of the plastic and makes it impossible to reuse for food-grade packaging.
Reverse vending machines eliminate this issue entirely. By separating plastic, aluminium, and glass at the exact point of return, the machine creates a clean, unpolluted stream of raw material.
Once the machine’s internal bins are full, the crushed materials are transported directly to specialized processing facilities. Because the material is so pure, it can be melted down and remanufactured immediately into brand-new beverage containers.
