DRS in Ireland!

Congratulations to Re-turn, retailers and stakeholders in the Republic of Ireland for going live with the deposit return scheme (DRS, “pantsystem” in Swedish) for used beverage containers today! A DRS is a very effective way to dramatically reduce littering and carbon emissions from the use of beverage containers. This is enabled by the closed loop recycling in a DRS – where a can or a bottle becomes a new can or a bottle. Ireland is the 6th European country to adopt DRS in the last 2 years, and the 16th European country overall to embrace DRS. Sweden is a pioneer launching its DRS in 1984! Many more countries plan to launch DRS in the coming years including but not limited to Poland, Czech Republic, UK and Singapore.
